Usually an innocuous question, to some it is cause for consternation. To ease confusion, the question can be rephrased. Where do you live? Universally less ambiguous, this question can be answered with little hesitation. But why should there be a distinction between the two inquiries?

Home connotes a single geographical space. City, region, and country are often called upon to describe the condition of Home. Associations tied to place are privileged and often dominate meanings of Home. Furthermore, the idea of Home is coupled with the idea of family. Home is the territory where family is defined.

The geographic fragmentation of family is a common contemporary condition. The dispersed family often requires a reinterpretation of Home. Thus, my thesis proposes to investigate the meaning of Home as the territory in which the shared identity of the geographically dispersed family is constructed.

In this investigation, I will draw upon personal ideas of Home and family. Although personally relevant, conditions of fragmentation, asynchronicity, plurality, and dispersion are also representative of a general postmodern reality. In assessing an alternate nature of Home, I will consider globalizing trends including increased personal mobility and electronic communication, multiple sites of habitation, and wider social and infrastructural networks. As local spatial conditions dissolve or become blurred, temporal coordinates are elevated to emphasize and anchor the meaning of Home.

In trying to reformulate the idea of Home, I will be examining my own family and the ways we negotiate family identity despite geographic separation. I will characterize how we communicate, forms of interaction, and our routines. As an alternative to place-centered definitions of Home, I have begun to envision Home as a kind of geographically dispersed infrastructure facilitating familial interactions, traditions, and rituals usually carried out in a typical home. In doing so, I will be exploring Home not through the redesign of a house, but through multiple (probably small-scale) architectural interventions that will involve existing infrastructure, institutions, and networks.

In envisioning Home as an infrastructure for the negotiation of family identity, I will begin by considering the synthesis of the supermarket and the automobile. Providing, respectively, for the modern necessities of sustenance and commuting, they represent a link to domesticity. As a context for daily life, these institutions are ubiquitous locally, nationally, and internationally. By considering these institutions as a departure point, I emphasize the prosaic aspects of domesticity in the construction and negotiation of family identity.
<div (Inside the lobby if its raining)
110 S. Market Street, San Jose, CA 95113 Map
Wednesday 9th March at 2:30

This is a place to put all of the info for our San Jose Trip.

So far, we have students from SFAI, UC Berkeley and San Jose State planning to collaborate on this adventure. We've talked about mixing the students together and forming small groups (about 7-10?) and giving each group a specific charge. We will offer some structure (perhaps a phrase) and then let them run with it creatively.

Students will use a variety of media: GPS, cameras, video cameras, etc.
Here are a few possibilities:
Nonplaces - non-destinational public spaces (alleys, underpasses, empty lots, etc)
Social Spaces - where people converge, outdoor and indoor
Wheels - the experience of traversing San Jose by car, bicycle, etc.
Getting Lost - secrets of San Jose
Outer/selves - identity, fashion, personal adornment, vehicles, style
Shopping - malls, grocery stores, restaurants, minimarts, etc.
Club Scene - San Jose PM
Subcities - does San Jose have districts, buroughs, or other delineations with the city? Even if they are unmarked or unsanctioned by city planners?

I like the idea of framing our process as if to present San Jose to people who have never been there - Anthony gave the example of a person in Paris preparing a propsal for ISEA.

the next vector

Here is the reading list for the trip. type='text'>about the previous post...

"New Honda commercial in the UK. Very important that you understand: There are no computer graphics or digital tricks in the film. Everything you see really happened in real time exactly as you see it.

The film took 606 takes. On the first 605 takes, something, usually very minor, didn't work. They would then have to set the whole thing up again.

The crew spent weeks shooting night and day. The film cost six million dollars and took three months to complete including a full engineering of the sequence.

In addition, it's two minutes long so every time Honda airs the film on British television, they're shelling out enough dough to keep any one of us in clover for a lifetime. Honda executives figure the ad will soon pay for itself simply in "free" viewings (Honda isn't paying a dime to have you watch this commercial!).

When the ad was pitched to senior executives, they signed off on it immediately without any hesitation — including the costs.

There are six and only six hand-made Accords in the world. To the horror of Honda engineers, the filmmakers disassembled two of them to make the film.

Everything you see in the film (aside from the walls, floor, ramp, and complete Honda Accord) are parts from those two cars.

When the ad was shown to Honda executives, they liked it and commented on how amazing computer graphics have gotten. They fell off their chairs when they found out it was for real."

So everytime we think our project gets tedious, just think about these poor guys who couldnt use computers to do their dirty work.
personal webpage

Just for reference, anyone can create their own personal webpage with the space allocated on your G drive. To do this, you go into the F:Apps drive where there is a file "www.BAT." By double clicking this "www.BAT" file, a folder is created on your G drive entitled "public.www". By creating this folder, a web directory is created under "http://cougar.ced.berkeley.edu/~[your novel login]" i.e. my web directory would be found under http://cougar.ced.berkeley.edu/~ffrazier. All web files (html, jpgs, swf, pdf) placed in this "public.www" folder are then available on the web at "http://cougar.ced.berkeley.edu/~[your novel login]/[filename]." For example, if I had a main webpage "index.html," I would place it in the folder "public.www" on my G drive. It would then be accessible on the web at "http://cougar.ced.berkeley.edu/~ffrazier/index.html."

I am sorry if this is confusing; it sounds more complicated than it really is. If anyone wants to do this and needs help, just see me. It is really nice since you have 100 megs available, which is much more than you will find at any other free web host--all ad free.

rest stops

this is from a website talking about driver fatigue and this is an excerpt on how the government is trying preventing the building of more rest stops even though they are needed.

this is from www.smartmotorist.com/sle/sle.htm

Recently, a new factor has arisen to exacerbate the driver-fatigue problem. In many parts of the country, local and county officials have rejected requests by truckstop owners and developers to open additional rest-stop facilities where long-distance truckers can sleep, eat, shower, shop, make phone calls, and have their vehicles serviced. Lack of safe, comfortable and reasonably priced rest stops makes truck driving unnecessarily difficult and increases the likelihood that a driver will push himself past the fatigue point in an effort to find a place to pull off the road and sleep. The reason for the rejection of building-permit applications for new or expanded truck stops seems to be the NIMBY ("Not In My Back Yard") movement, which increasingly tries to banish commercial and industrial activities from any location near residential property. In some cases, local residents have claimed that truckers, and perhaps truck-stop personnel as well, represent a "bad element" that will lower property values. In others, residents claim that property values will be diminished by truck noise and exhaust and by the 24-hour operation that is essential in the truck-stop industry. Although some of the objections to truck-stop construction have merit, others are erroneous. In both cases, however, failure to expand truck-stop capacity is a threat to driver well-being and hence to safety on the highway.

AutoCad blocks

For those interested in inserting cars/trucks/people (ie scale) to your drawings go to: www.cben.net. Her work can be described as liquid architecture for an ever-changing environment generated by computer code. The images projected onto pre-existing or fabricated architectural surfaces challenge the preconceived notion of architecture as a fixed and stable medium. Shor's work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. Recent shows include Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, SF Camera Work gallery, SFAC gallery, Ars Electronica, Linz, and Herzliya Museum of Art, Israel. Her work was included in the 2004 California Biennial in the Orange County Museum of Art, and the 2004 Annual GenArt Shows, NewFangle and Emerge. She received the 2003 Bay Area Murphy Award in fine arts. Shor received her BA in Art History and Philosophy from the Tel-Aviv University, and MFA in Conceptual Information Art from San Francisco State University.

Free to the public.

sex, drugs and cocoa puffs

A book very much worth a look...especially if you have a guilty love of pop culture.

Mies' Gas Station?!?

http://www.artfifa.com/photo-an/167.asp

Ummm, is there anyway we can get our hands on this film???

from website:
After the Westmount Square in Montreal, the Toronto-Dominion Centre in Toronto, the Neue National Gallery in Berlin, the Seagram Building in New York and the Lake Shore Drive apartments in Chicago, the fabled architect Mies van der Rohe (1886-1969) designed a gas station on Montreal’s Nun’s Island in 1967. Following the success of Expo 67, promoters wanted to make the island “the most marvellous residential area in North America.” An object of fascination for architectural specialists and students worldwide, this simple and utilitarian service station reflects the divergent views held by experts and laymen regarding “everyday” structures, which most of us tend to ignore. In addition to exploring the interplay of form and function in the works of Mies van der Rohe, this film gauges our awareness of architectural language and the role of the architect in society. Observations from the superstars of the world of architecture are interlaced with anecdotes from regular people who come into daily contact with the eminent architect’s work.

article

a strenuous article about diagramming and the digital…

http://www.reiser-umemoto.com/periodicals/kb/kb.htm

Federal Highway Administration Statistics 2003

http://www.fhwa.dot.gov/policy/ohim/hs03/index.htm

Section V on roadway extent is perhaps the most relevant. Not stopped or pulled over: nothing routine. I always drive properly. A bit fast, perhaps, but always with consummate skill and a natural feel for the road that even cops recognize. No cop was ever born who isn’t a sucker for a finely executed hi-speed Controlled Drift all the way around one of those cloverleaf freeway interchanges.

Few people understand the psychology of dealing with a highway traffic-cop. Your normal speeder will panic and immediately pull over to the side when he sees the big red light behind him . . . and then he will start apologizing, begging for mercy. This is wrong. It arouses contempt in the cop-heart. The thing to do -- when you're running along at a hundred or so and you suddenly find a red flashing CHP-tracker on your trail -- what you want to do then is accelerate. Never pull over with the first siren howl. Mash it down and make the bastard chase you at speeds up to 120 all the way to the next exit. He will follow. But he won't know what to make of your blinker signal that says you are about to turn right.

This is to let him know you're looking for a proper place to pull off and talk... keep signaling and hope for an off-ramp, one of those uphill side-loops with a sign saying Max Speed 25 ... and the trick, at this point, is to suddenly leave the freeway and take him into the chute at no less than a hundred miles an hour...

He will lock his brakes about the same time you lock yours, but it will take him a moment to realize that he's about to make a 180 degree turn at this speed . . . but you will be ready for it, braced for the Gs and the fast heel-toe work, and with any luck at all you will have come to a complete stop off the road at the top of the turn and be standing beside your car by the time he catches up. He will not be reasonable at first. He will want the first word. Let him have it. His brain will be in turmoil: he may begin jabbering, or even pull his gun. Let him unwind. Keep smiling. The idea is to show him that you were always in total control of yourself and your vehicle - while he lost control of everything.

It helps to have a police/press badge in your wallet when he calms down enough to ask for your license. I had one of these-but I also had a can of Budweiser in my hand. Until that moment, I was unaware that I was holding it. I had felt totally on top of the situation… but when I looked down and saw that little red/silver evidence-bomb in my hand, I knew I was fucked….

--Hunter S. At the time there were only 150 miles of paved roads in the entire country, all of them within city limits. There were no gas stations and virtually no road maps as we know them today.

Traveling with his co-driver Sewall K. Crocker and a bulldog named Bud (who wore goggles, just like his master, to keep the dust from his eyes), Jackson had the adventure of his life. He encountered pioneers in wagon trains, cowboys who used their lariats to tow him out of sand drifts, ranch wives who traded homecooked meals for a brief ride on the "Go-Like-Hell Machine," and people who deliberately sent him miles out of his way just so their relatives could get their first glimpse of an automobile.

This was America's first transcontinental road trip, and like all road trips that would follow it included the usual mix of breakdowns and flat tires, inedible meals and uncomfortable beds, getting lost and enduring bad weather — and having a truly unforgettable experience crossing the nation's vast landscape.

http://www.pbs.org/horatio/car/

Twisted intersections.

Late night humor or reality check? 3111. i haven't checked it out yet so can't attest to its pertinence, although it sounds promising.

"On an overcast morning in 1999, William Gibson stepped into a limousine in Los Angeles and set off on a road trip around North America. The limo was rigged with digital cameras, a computer, a TV, a stereo and a cellphone. The entire movie was generated by this four-wheeled media machine. Both an account of Gibson's life and work and a commentary on the world outside the car windows, the film reveals the landscape of Western culture on the edge of the new millennium, in the throes of convulsive, tech-driven change."

<img width='1' height='1' He takes inanimate objects and makes them move with machines he creates. His work plays off the idea that when an object is put in motion we cant help but think that it is, to some extent, alive. We then start to interpreted the objects motion as a form of expression and project emotions onto it. It is fascinating to realize when you watch a chicken bone walk you are actually sympathizing with its struggle. I don't know if any of this is directly applicable to our project but check out the site. Vectors are, after all, about the motion of things/objects/people etc. I'm sure we've all looked at highways and thought of snakes or some other living organism. The book deals with the development of LA in terms of transportation (ie. trains -> freeways) and thus seems highly relevant to the class. It's also a fast read because Banham is lucid, witty and relatively concise. came across a possibly helpful rule of thumb for comfortable deceleration:

from speeds of 70mph ----- a deceleration of 6.2mph/sec is found to be comfortable threshold<br They are totally dedicated to The Car and converse with each other only when necessary. At a gas station, The Driver and The Mechanic, along with a girl who has ingratiated herself into their world, meet G.T.O., a middle-aged man who fabricates stories about his exploits. It is decided to have a race to Washington, D.C., where the winner will get the loser's car. Along the way, the race and the highway metaphorically depict the lives of these contestants as they struggle to their destination.

readings

Here are some readings that Zoe and I want you to be familiar with before the start of semester.
